The RV Jones Science Lecture 2022
Sir Michael Houghton
Introduced by Professor Kevin Fong
This year’s RV Jones science lecture will be delivered by Nobel Prize winner and Alleyn’s alumnus Sir Michael Houghton.
In 1989, Michael Houghton and his colleagues identified and isolated the genome of the novel virus, Hepatitis C. The discovery of the virus revealed the cause of much chronic blood-borne hepatitis – a major global health problem that causes cirrhosis and liver cancer in people around the world – and was an important step in the development of blood tests and medications that have saved millions of lives. For the discovery of the Hepatitis C virus, Michael Houghton was jointly awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Michael is a passionate medical researcher and in this year’s RV Jones Science lecture he will describe his academic career as well as his ongoing work on HCV, COVID vaccines and antiviral research, as well as his work on Alzheimer’s.
Michael will join us online from Alberta, Canada and we are delighted that Alleyn’s Scientist in Residence Professor Kevin Fong will chair the event in person.
All really welcome
